Community Kitchen Express is expanding! The groundbreaking for a new building took place on March 28, and construction is expected to last about seven months. Still in the same location at the corner of West 11th Street and North Monroe Street (next to the Boys & Girls Club), CK Express has served meals to community members in need for over two decades. Last year a total of 39,388 meals were served at CK Express.
Back in 2001, the township provided the original building for this purpose when Nancy Brinegar was township trustee. The township leased the building to CK Express for free until selling it to them officially in June of 2022. Throughout those two decades, the township gave grants each year to support Community Kitchen’s food service operations there. This year, the township contributed $50,000 toward rebuilding CK Express, and current trustee Efrat Rosser is elated to see the service expand in our township.
Building plans include a main level for food service and a unique food storage space above it. For some weeks during the construction phase starting in mid-May, CK Express will temporarily move their meal service to the BHA Community Building located at 1002 N. Summit St. Bloomington IN 47404. Patrons will still be able to enjoy the wholesome meals and friendly staff during their regular hours of 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Monday through Saturday at this temporary location in the same neighborhood. Through efforts like these, the Community Kitchen, the township, and BHA can continue making sure that no one needs to suffer from hunger in Monroe County.
